Terror Attack on Jammu Army Base: One Soldier Injured, Search Operation Underway
In a disturbing turn of events, terrorists launched an attack on the Sunjawan military camp, the largest army base in Jammu, on Monday morning. The attack, which occurred between 10:00 and 10:30 am, involved firing from a distance, resulting in one army jawan being injured.
As per the defense spokesperson, Lt Col Suneel Bartwal, the entire base has been sealed off to prevent any further incidents, and a thorough search operation is currently underway to ensure the safety of the area.
This attack is a grim reminder of the February 2018 assault on the same base by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorists, which tragically led to the loss of six soldiers and a civilian, along with three terrorists. That attack also left around 20 others, including both soldiers and civilians, injured.
Rising Tensions and Recent Infiltration Attempts in Jammu & Kashmir
This latest attack comes on the heels of several recent encounters in Jammu and Kashmir, where security forces have been actively thwarting infiltration attempts by terrorists. Just days ago, three terrorists were neutralized in two separate gunfights in the Kupwara district. Two were killed in Machhal, while another was taken down in the Tangdhar sector.
Simultaneously, another encounter broke out in the Rajouri district of Jammu, where security forces launched a late-night search operation in the Lathi area to locate terrorists hiding in the region. The operation, which began at 9:30 pm, was concentrated around the village Kheri Mohra Lathi and the Danthal area.
A Region on High Alert as Elections Approach
The timing of these infiltration attempts is particularly concerning, as Jammu and Kashmir are on the brink of assembly elections, with the first phase of voting set for September 18. The security situation in the region remains tense, with the administrative and defense leadership closely monitoring the developments.
The region has witnessed a series of violent encounters this year, resulting in the deaths of both security personnel and civilians. So far, five personnel and seven civilians have fallen victim to terror attacks in Kashmir, while 14 security personnel and 11 civilians have lost their lives in extremist attacks in Jammu.
As the region gears up for the upcoming elections, ensuring the safety and security of the people remains a top priority for the authorities. The situation remains fluid, with security forces on high alert to prevent any further incidents.
