Tragic Loss: NHL Star Johnny Gaudreau and Brother Fatally Struck While Cycling in New Jersey
In a heartbreaking incident, NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his younger brother Matthew tragically lost their lives while cycling on a rural road in New Jersey. The incident occurred on Thursday night, as the brothers were biking along County Route 551.
The driver of a Jeep Cherokee, identified as Sean Higgins, 43, attempted to overtake two slower-moving vehicles by using the oncoming lane. As he tried to re-enter the right lane, he struck Johnny and Matthew, leading to their untimely deaths. Authorities suspect that Higgins was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the collision. He has since been charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and is currently detained at the Salem County Correctional Facility.
Johnny Gaudreau, fondly known as "Johnny Hockey," was a celebrated NHL player who spent 11 seasons in the league, primarily with the Calgary Flames, before joining the Columbus Blue Jackets. His love for the game was evident on and off the ice, where he was not only a skilled player but also a devoted family man and friend.
Matthew Gaudreau, 29, shared a deep bond with his brother, both on the ice and in life. The two played together at Boston College and Gloucester Catholic High School. Matthew also had a professional hockey career, including a stint with the Worcester Railers in the 2021-2022 season.
The Gaudreau family, deeply rooted in New Jersey's hockey community, is now mourning an unimaginable loss. Their father, Guy Gaudreau, was a longtime hockey coach at Gloucester Catholic, and he instilled a love for the sport in his sons from a young age.
The Columbus Blue Jackets, along with the entire hockey community, have expressed their profound grief, remembering Johnny not just for his talent, but for the joy and passion he brought to the sport.
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of impaired driving and the tragic consequences it can bring.
