Walmart Recalls Great Value Apple Juice Over Elevated Arsenic Levels in 25 States
Walmart has issued a recall for nearly 10,000 cases of its Great Value brand apple juice after tests revealed higher-than-acceptable levels of inorganic arsenic, a contaminant that could pose health risks. The recall, which affects 25 states, Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia, was initially announced on August 15, with the FDA later classifying it as more urgent. While the elevated arsenic levels are unlikely to cause serious or lasting health problems, they may lead to temporary symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
The juice, produced by Florida-based Refresco Beverages, was voluntarily pulled from shelves after the contamination was discovered. Walmart's spokesperson emphasized that customer safety is the company's top priority and assured that the product has been removed from all affected stores. The recall highlights the importance of routine testing, as both inorganic and organic forms of arsenic are commonly found in food products, though the inorganic type is more toxic and linked to more severe health effects, including cancer.
The FDA has not reported any illnesses related to the recalled apple juice, and the levels detected are not expected to cause serious harm. Nonetheless, Walmart and Refresco are investigating the issue to ensure customer safety.
